My Top 5 Songs on Waiting

woman-listening-to-music

One very beautiful thing about music is how it has a way of reaching out to us in the midst of our circumstance, more so Spirit-filled music. I don’t know if I’ve told you this, but these are times when I believe God would have every one of us learn to WAIT.

The truth is there are several beautiful songs that sing about waiting but I’ll just narrow them down to 5 because these songs spoke very specially to my heart and had at particular times done specific things; either encouraged, strengthened or God had used them to speak to me. That’s why I have them here: not because they’re better than others.

So here is my “waiting” playlist in no particular order.

  1. Soar by Meredith Andrews

(Verse 1)

Here I remind myself what You said over me

Here I remind my soul who You are

You said You won’t relent

Won’t let go, won’t forget

Every promise You have whispered to my heart

As I wait, As I wait on You

(Chorus)

I’m gonna run and not grow weary

I’m gonna walk and not grow faint

Rise up on wings like eagles

To soar

I know with everything you’re with me

I know you’re working as I wait

Lift me up on wings like eagles

To soar

(Verse 2)

This desert holds a song I will sing, on and on

You’re a river when the ground I walk is dry

You will set the crooked straight

Clear my path, make a way

You will lead me from the valley to the heights

As I wait, As I wait on You

(Repeat Chorus)

(Bridge)

Creator, Keeper

Life breather

Your name is greater than anything I’ve faced

Sustainer, Saviour,

Stronghold breaker

Your name is greater than anything I’ve faced

As I wait, as I wait on You

I will wait, God, I will wait on You

(Repeat

 Chorus)

The Cheese:

Asides the fact that I love how the song points ones heart to Isaiah 40:31, I particularly like that line that says “This desert holds a song I will sing, on and on”. It reminds me of that scripture in Hosea 2:14:

“Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her.”

There is a song for every desert. There is a word. There is GOD and that is what makes waiting so beautiful.

  1. Cave of Adullum by Sarah Groves

Speak to me, speak to me in my cave of Adullam.

Reach to me, reach to me.

No one cares for my soul.

I thought I saw your kingdom,

but it’s not going to happen like I thought it would happen.

Remind me, remind me of the vision you gave me.

Remind me, remind me what anointing oil is for.

I need to know you’re near me.

I need to know you are holding me just as closely

As the day you took my life and gave me a vision,

as the day you poured the oil and gave me a dream.

I can’t believe this is happening.

How does a shepherd become a king?

The Cheese:

The song points to David’s experience in the Cave of Adullam (1 Samuel 22) and Adullam is interpreted as “hiding place”. There is much to be said on that but this song particularly reminds me people had gone through this stage before, it also reminds me that “but it’s not going to happen like I thought it would happen.”

The line that did it for me was “As the day you took my life and gave me a vision,” When God leads, He disrupts our lives but what a glorious disruption!

  1. My Revival by Lauren Daigle

(Verse)

I will run and not grow weary

I will walk, I will not faint

I will soar on wings like eagles

Find my rest in Your everlasting name

(Chorus)

You are my revival

Jesus on You I wait

I’ll lean on Your promise

You will renew my strength

(Repeat Verse)

(Repeat Chorus 3X)

(Repeat Verse)

You are my revival

Jesus on You I wait

I’ll lean on Your promise

You will renew my strength

The Cheese:

This song like the others is Spirit filled. I love the truth in it: “You are my Revival”. That’s it!

I was reading a book that said, “Revival is a person; it is Jesus…it is the daily experience of a soul full of Jesus and running over.” It is not just a movement; it is not a programme. And I couldn’t agree more. It is while we wait that this Revival finds expression in us for we would mount up with wings as eagles.

  1. As Long as it takes by Meredith Andrews

(Verse 1)

I’m tired, do I have to keep proving myself?

I’m weary and drawing from an empty well

I need You more than I ever have

So, Jesus, come and shatter my darkness somehow

(Chorus)

And I won’t speak until You speak

I won’t move until You move me

I won’t sing, sing over me

I will wait as long as it takes

(Verse 2)

I’m restless for something significant

But I’m helpless ’cause I’ve done all I can

I want You more than I ever have

So, Jesus, come and hold me, I’m shaking right now

(Repeat Chorus)

(Bridge)

You are the comforter so comfort me

You’re the sustainer so be enough for me

You are my Father and Your love for me

Is where I’ll find my rest

I won’t speak

And I won’t speak until You speak

I won’t move until You move me

I won’t sing, sing over me

I will wait as long as it takes

Jesus, I will wait as long as it takes

The Cheese:

This is one of those songs I can listen to a million times over and not get tired (okay, maybe that’s a frill). I love the chorus sooo much because it is my confession, my resolve:

“And I won’t speak until You speak

I won’t move until You move me

I won’t sing, sing over me

I will wait as long as it takes”

  1. We Dance by Steffany Frizzell Gretzinger and Bethel Music

(Verse 1)

You steady me

Slow and sweet, we sway

Take the lead and I will follow

Finally ready now

To close my eyes and just believe

That You won’t lead me

Where You don’t go

(Chorus)

When my faith gets tired

And my hope seems lost

You spin me round and round

And remind me of that song

The one You wrote for me

And we dance

And we dance

(Verse 2)

And I’ve been told

To pick up my sword

And fight for love

Little did I know

That Love had won for me

Here in Your arms

You still my heart again

And I breathe You in

Like I’ve never breathed ’till now

(Repeat Chorus)

(Bridge 2X)

And I will lock eyes

With the One who’s ransomed me

The One who gave me joy for mourning

And I will lock eyes

With the One who’s chosen me

The One who set my feet to dancing

We dance (4X

Just You and me

(Bridge 4X)

It’s nice to know I’m not alone

I’ve found my home here in Your arms

The Cheese:

At first I didn’t realize this song was about waiting. But looking again, it became obvious. I mean what is waiting if not learning to dance with Abba? Consider this:

“…Take the lead and I will follow

Finally ready now

To close my eyes and just believe

That You won’t lead me

Where You don’t go”

Knowing that my soul will dance with the One who ransomed me, that I’ll move in tandem with Him, has a way of reminding and encouraging me that waiting is always worth it.

Side Note

When we wait, we are never alone; for it is not about what we are waiting for but whom we are waiting on. And that’s what makes it so beautiful. It would be really nice if you can check out those songs, they’ll help you.

So, what are your favorite songs on waiting? I’ll love to hear them.

Grace!
