I remember growing up and how at a point everyone, including me seemed to be obsessed with Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love” (I think she wasn’t the original composer though). We sang it as special renditions, choreographed to it and just randomly mumbled it, unmindful of lyrical murder.

And oh boy, did I murder that song. It took years before I actually heard what she was singing in some parts because I was too ashamed to ask. But before then, I’d just sing aloud in parts I knew and mumble in parts I wasn’t so sure of.

Anywho, recently, I was studying the scripture and found this:

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13

It wasn’t the first time I was reading it. In fact, I have quoted it on several occasions but after studying, I realized I’d been mistaken all along. I’m not sure I can explain what I used to think it was. It was like I had gotten so used to the scripture that it had lost it’s meaning. But then I realized He meant this all along:

“A man laying down his life for his friends – no one has a greater love than this.”

It hit me, like, “Woah! Hol’ up!” And I was like, “Lord, Whitney Houston lied!”

And that she did. She and mainstream media. They are all lying to us. Scripture confirms that. No one has a greater love than the one who dies for his friends. And who passes this test? Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. And so He wins, hands down and we can all nod our heads and cheer.

But then someone tries to contend. Look at the chorus of the song:

“I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadows

If I fail, if I succeed

At least I’ll live as I believe

No matter what they take from me

They can’t take away my dignity

Because the greatest love of all

Is happening to me

I found the greatest love of all

Inside of me

The greatest love of all

Is easy to achieve

Learning to love yourself

It is the greatest love of all.”

The first line, that phrase, “walking in someone’s shadows” means to follow someone’s footstep or try to be like a person that is ahead of you. It also means to tag along behind a person in a crowd so that they make a way for you. Kinda like following a police escort.

This song reeks of self dependence which is a sin:

“Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the LORD.” – Isaiah 31:1 (NIV)

God MADE us. Like, He created us. We did not create ourselves. He made us for His own pleasure. Wanting to live our lives on our own terms and by our own understanding is an anomaly and it leads to destruction.

He made us to worship. He created us to be like Him. He created us to walk in His steps, to abide under the shadow of the Almighty, to live our life on HIS terms and let’s say, to ‘walk in His shadow’,

“Because the greatest love of all

Is happening to me

I found the greatest love of all

Inside of me..”

So she tells us she’s experiencing the greatest love of all and reveals that this love is “Inside of me”.

What, No! That’s a lie! No human being, in them self, has love. There is no love in us. We cannot love by ourselves. It is just impossible. If even it looks like love, it is fake and absolutely substandard. When people talk about love, they usually refer to the heart, an example is when a person says “follow your heart” or how that the heart is often used as a symbol of love. But here’s the thing:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly perverse and corrupt and severely, mortally sick! Who can know it [perceive, understand, be acquainted with his own heart and mind]?” Jeremiah 17:9 -AMP

Did you see that? How can love: pure, true, real and dare I say…great (?), exist in such a heart? It is laughable.

The only time when love can exist in any human is when the Spirit of God, through salvation, takes residence in us.

“The greatest love of all

Is easy to achieve

Learning to love yourself

It is the greatest love of all.”

This love she speaks so glowingly of is “easy to achieve”. But please I ask you, how is God coming down as a mere man, living in hardships and dying in extreme agony, easy? What, I wonder, is easy about being beaten over and again with a sharp whip? What is easy about bleeding to death? How is being held up on a cross by 3 nails an easy feat?

Now she ruins the whole house of cards by saying: “Learning to love yourself…It is the greatest love of all.”

Brothers and sisters, this is the height of it. This is a lie in black and white, backed up by a sonorous voice and symphony, to deceive us. Because like all the lies of the enemy, it is presented not as worms but as a sumptuous fruit filled with worms. Can’t you see it?

Am I saying not to love yourself? No. But I’m saying that it is not the greatest love. And more importantly, you cannot truly love yourself or anyone if you don’t understand God’s love. If you have not been to Calvary to understand that love is a person, that love is DEATH and love is LIFE.

When you begin to realize that love is holy and sacred, you will want to love (even yourself) by being holy. When you see it is truthful, you will tell the truth and be true, however bitter or hard. When you understand it is patient and kind, you will not give up on others/yourself or beat them/yourself up. When you see that love is humble, you will not hesitate to lean on God for help and guidance and to drop your rights and privileges to see that love wins. When you realize that love is not self-seeking, you will understand that when self-love becomes “me first” (as it often is), it is not love at all. And when you know that love does not keep record of wrongs, forgiveness becomes a lifestyle both for others and yourself (1 Corinthians 13).

Love is not first emotional, in fact, most times it is not. Love is not just affection, it is a call to crucify self and not to promote it. It is a call to be like God and express God (who is Love) to others. Which means, if my love in general does not show forth or express God, it is not love.Simple.

It is not easy. It is not cheap. It is not vain. But it is worth it.

And all because God first expressed the greatest love of all to us through Christ.

Side Note:

So today is Valentine’s. If you want to celebrate this day, please do so expressing the love of God.

Funny thing is, the true history of Valentine had very little to do with romantic love and all to do with one saint who was persecuted for standing for Christ and His love. This the devil took and coated with lies that have dragged many to destruction.

God’s grace.

So I took time after a long time to go through your thoughts and I must say in all sincerity that they are true and sure. Very profound is your definition of love…

Hmm…I think this is very timely and relevant. In a time when the enemy heavily relies on music as a tool to program and re-program the human mind. Thanks dear, you taught me something today.
